A Case of the Quarantine Blues (and Reds) / Beauties Pageant 93

Friends, you’ve found me in another quarantine funk. Last week’s project brought my pandemic-time total to nine finished quilts, and I haven’t touched my machine since. Alas, the hobby that has kept me afloat the past five months is losing its luster.

So I’m in the middle of a deliberate reset. I’ve been reading a lot of good books—reading as if it were my job. When I’m done bingeing on books, I’ll probably give my house a thorough scrub. Perhaps then I’ll get back to sewing.

So today’s featured finish is not from me but from my friend Chelsea (@patch_the_giraffe). She tested my Warm and Cool Coin Quilt pattern and sewed a lap-size version in purple-y reds and the coolest of blues and grays. I love it something fierce!

Chels is known for making her quilt backs something special. She often builds backs around leftover blocks or fabric, so it was no surprise to me to see two towers of coins on the reverse of this project, too.

Other versions of the Warm and Cool Coin Quilt can be viewed in these posts.

The Warm and Cool Coin Quilt pattern is available in my Etsy shop.

And for those of you looking to re-create the cuteness of Gingiber’s Merrily pattern (which I sewed up and posted here), Lark Cottons still has nine critter panels in stock. : )

Has sewing and quilting proved to be your lifeline in this time of social distancing and staying at home? Where else have you been focusing your energies?

  1. I think I might be going through the same funk you are! I have kept busy for months now on all sorts of projects but the last two weeks or so although I quilt in the evening I have not been keeping as busy in the day hours - I need to start to get motivated again.

  2. It's so good to see a quilt from Chelsea; she has such a great sense of proportion and color. I hope that you aren't stressing over the reset: we all need that sometimes!

  3. Sometimes you just need to take a break. Hopefully keeping busy with totally unrelated things will help :)

  4. Having the same experience, as I haven't touched my machine for a couple weeks. For me, I think I'm just pulled in too many directions right now to focus. Let's hope we get through this soon!

  5. Hi Michelle! I would be remiss if I didn't ask about my buddy, Rosie. Is she okay? Isn't she able to pull you - literally - out of your funk? Lick your face to death until you fall into a fit of giggles? As long as she's okay, it's okay to be in a funk. Who hasn't had AT LEAST ONE in the last five months?? You've been on a tear, sewing quilt tops like there was no tomorrow. Thankfully, we've still had a tomorrow. Back in March, I couldn't sew a stitch if you paid me. Well, maybe if you paid me enough. But I had NO interest. Now, I'm thinking why the heck didn't I sew my heart out then?? I'm back in the office (why????) and now I have no time to sew, so naturally I am really jonesing to do sew. Just be kind to yourself! If you aren't - well, why would anyone else be nice to you if you don't care. Plus, you want your kids to see you being kind to yourself. It's okay. We won't tell that darn quilting police. {{Hugs}} a bunch for you. Oh, and that quilt rocks! I love the red and blue together - and the backing is a knockout. I'd love to be known for something cool like that - making quilt backs something special. I'll have to work on it. ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. I've been sewing up a storm both piecing and quilting. And, I've gotten several customer quilts that I'm slowly working through. (The people know I am not zipping through the quilting and they are fine with it.) However, some days I just don't have the mojo. A couple of times I've FaceTimed my BFF who lives two states away. We chat, consult on current projects and laugh. By the end of the convo I'm feeling much better and generally the next day I'm back to sewing. The top I finished today had me in a funk for several weeks. I finally started moving forward over the last week or so and was THRILLED to finish it today. Quilting it will come much later! On to another UFO. I'm an avid reader so I spend some time reading every day. Unsolicited advice: don't read 2 tear jerker books in a row. I went through a half a box of tissues on two books. Take care of yourself. If cleaning is your thing -- how great it will be to have a sparkling house. Do what you feel like doing! Take care.

  7. Oh, I sure know about your pandemic funk, as it has surely hit all of us these past months. For me, the way to handle it was to not make quilts, but make/finish other things. It's turned out to be very worthwhile as my UFOs and WIPs are almost non-existent. I have a few very slow makes going, and am enjoying a sense of lightness, for not having projects to weigh on me. Still, everyone is handling all this stay-at-home time in different ways. Love being able to listen to book after book (audiobooks), and - as you know - write reviews about them. I've already listened to many more books than I did in the whole of 2019! Keep going to "find your way" during these tough times.

  8. Sometimes you need a break. The fabric will be ready when you are. ☺
