MMM Quilts' Pop Star Quilt / Beauties Pageant 208

Quilty friends, its been a while! When I last posted, QuiltCon was in full swing. It was the third time I attended the Modern Quilt Guild's annual event, and the experience lived up to my expectations. Over the course of four days, I listened to some lectures, greeted quilters at the Quilt Pattern Mart booth, and caught up with friends from all over the world.

And I came home, exhausted and on the brink of illness. : /

I was happy, then, to have this baby quilt, from MMM Quilts Pop Star, all basted and ready for some straight-line quilting. It was the perfect easy project to while away the time when I wasnt feeling up to life as usual.

Pop Star is one of those rare star patterns that immediately catch my eye—I think its super unique! I also love that its a whole-composition quilt, as opposed to a block-based project, and that it comes together quickly with just a handful of fabrics.

The trick here is to consider directionality and value: I steered away from fabrics with a strong sense of direction and made sure there was adequate contrast between the fabrics I used. It sounds like an easy order to fill, but the only fabrics from stash were the coral ladybugs and center-star polka dots. Everything else, including the looks-like-it-was-made-for-this-quilt binding fabric, came from my local quilt shop.

Im always looking for baby quilt patterns to add to my repertoire. Needless to say, I will be making Pop Star again in the future! Do you have any thoughts on how I can change things up next time? My inclination is to repeat my approach with a white/off-white background, a midtone print for the large star, and darker tones for the middle star and exploding stars, but Id love to hear your thoughts. Thank you in advance!

  2. What a fun pieced backing. Welcome home and I hope this means you are feeling better again with no long lasting ill effects. A white background is lovely, but what about reversing and trying a dark background and light central star?

  6. This is a great "welcome spring" kind of quilt. I love the fabrics you chose for this beautiful pattern. I hope you've fully recovered now. I went on a year and a half break from blogging but I'm ready to jump back in! Stay well!

  7. Very cute quilt! if you want to mix it up next time, you might consider switching the background and major star fabrics. That would be a different look! Hope you feel better!

  8. I love this pattern from Sandra? Mine too had a white background! Mid color star! Contrasting pop stars, but my middle star didn’t have enough contrast. I was working from my stash only, so it is what it is! And baby Scarlet doesn’t care, but it definitely change that in the future!,

  9. Wow, those fabrics go together so well, it's like they are from a coordinated line! Love Sandra's pattern, and it looks wonderful as a baby quilt. I can see so many ways of making the quilt--by switching values around or reversing the scale of the prints, or using solids with or without prints. Seems like you could make a series, each emphasizing a different part of the design. Might be a rabbit hole...

  10. I love this pattern and have made 2 of the baby quilts so far. This version is just too pretty. I just drew up one plan for a lavender background and a mid purple and a green/purple patterned fabric for the major star parts. 😉Carol

  11. Wasn't QuiltCon incredible? It was my sixth time attending, and I noted that it keeps getting better and better. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you... but maybe that was for the best, if you came home not feeling well. :-) I'm sorry you were among that crowd of folks who caught something, many of whom caught COVID. Thankfully, I returned home full of vigor and reenergized for quiltmaking. It's nice that you could quilt this one while you weren't feeling up-to-snuff. It's a lovely quilt.

  12. I am sorry to have missed QuiltCon this year - really trying for next year. Love your version of Sandra's PopStar. The dark background could be fun with rainbow colored stars (well 5 out of 7 of the colors), or the center star the same as the accent star?
