Someone is turning 50 this month, and that someone is me!
I can sum up my approach to this milestone in two words: radical acceptance. I’ve heard a couple you’re-getting-older jokes from friends and family, and I’m not fazed by entering my next decade. Sure, I could do without the midlife metabolism, the less-than-stellar hearing, the mass mailings from AARP, but 50 in itself seems like no big deal.
As part of radical acceptance, I plan on celebrating all month long. The way I see it, the activities for any old birthday should last at least a full week. Fifty merits a monthlong series of events ... multiple dinners out, several cakes, and plenty of presents.

ReplyDeleteOh, my dear, I think radical acceptance is ok, but you? YOU? You are worthy of joyous celebration. Admittedly, I am looking through the lens of many friends and friends of friends who are battling some serious life-threatening bad surprises. Yes, this makes me significantly less fun, but I have been reminded too many times this past month that I not only don't need to lament my birthdays, even the big ones, but I need to celebrate them!!! I go through my life planning and worrying about the long-away future, yet if I get to this long-away future, I will be a lucky, lucky girl.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you, Michelle! Turning 50 was a big one for me and once I "got over" the shock, it was a great turning point. I hope it will be for you too! As far as prizes for giveaways, I'm happy with anything to do with sewing/quilting...fabric, thread, books, patterns, scraps, needles...it's all good and will always be used!

Happy 50th Michelle! Thank you for hosting this pageant for so many years. I like the gift certificate idea because you can buy fabric, patterns or tools if the shop stocks them! Turning 60 was traumatizing for me but then so was 50, so I am trying to just embrace the days and years and honestly I still feel about 42 (40 was another traumatizing milestone). My friend John who is 20 years older than I am always tells me: you're on the right side of dirt and that's all that matters!

Radical acceptance is perfect. I remember 50 not being such a big deal - but others made it so. 60 felt harder for me...so we went on a fabulous little trip...perfect. Thanks for sharing your celebration with us and you be you and have a happy birthday month!
