I offered only sneak peeks of this quilt previously, but now that it has been gifted, I can give you the full reveal ...
This is Elizabeth Hartman’s Neighborhood pattern, from her book Modern Patchwork. At 45 inches by 60 inches, it’s a modestly sized throw quilt and features a diamond quilting pattern from Jacquie Gering’s Walk. It’s the third quilt I can check off my Finish-A-Long Q2 list.
I spent much more time selecting fabric for this project than I did sewing its 12 oversize blocks. I started by finding the bird fabric, which is from Kate Spain’s Early Bird line, and fussy-cutting the birds to incorporate as many bright colors as I could. I did have to buy a few fat quarters—most of which ended up being from Kate’s other fabric collections—to sew the birdhouses, but I otherwise used stash and scraps on the top and back of this quilt.
Have you encountered this phenomenon, too—when you labor over a fabric pull only to be surprised how quickly the quilt top comes together?

Wow, what a beautiful quilt! I have made a few blocks from that pattern as well, I reduced the size and made a table runner. Your quilt makes me think I need to make a whole quilt of them, so fabulous.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt with great colors! Hope it is enjoyed and loved a lot :) Congrats on the finish! xo
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle! In my opinion, all the time you spent selecting fabrics was time well spent. Seriously - the bird fabric as the cornerstone of all the houses was brilliant. It is just perfect and that's why the whole piece has such a great cohesiveness to it. The color palette is pleasing to the eye, and the quilting pattern you chose highlights the design so nicely. Wonderful finish! Makes me want to run - RUN - to start my own version right now. Why or why do I have to work?! ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing sometimes agonizing over fabric and then the quilt comes together so fast! I have all of the heart eyes for everything Kate Spain so I love this quilt!
ReplyDeleteWow Michelle - I just love this finish. I have a thing for birds, IRL and on fabric. But these sweet houses with the birds as center stars are really perfect. Great fabric choices - the colors are so nice. Are the rooflines paper pieced? They are so precise. I need to go take a closer look at this pattern. I hadn't seen it before.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great finish. The quilting is awesome. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI LIKE how you did the back! And those birdhouses have residents! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I didn't set out to use a transparency technique on the back, but it was a great way to use up some of the extra bird fabric and two bigger cuts from my stash. : )
DeleteI love those cheerful houses! Thank you for participating in the FAL, on behalf of the 2019 global FAL hosts.
